| What if you could travel to parallel worlds? The same place, the same day and year, but with everything else different. Well, the Sliders did, at least on TV. And they actually did it rather quite successfully. Sliders is considered to be one of the best science fiction shows that had come out of the boob tube in the 90's. It has captured audiences' attention with a very intense story that got many people hooked, at the same time featuring science fiction elements that will fill a fanboy's desire. The show also threw in a little bit of humor which added to the interesting characters. Sliders follow the story of physics graduate Quinn Mallory (played by Jerry O' Cornell) and his friends travels, or “slides” into a variety of alternate realities using a device of his own invention. Each episode of the show has Mallory and his group land in a different world from a wormhole. They then interact with the people from that world while trying to find the right way to get back to their home universe. Later in the series, the group also encounter a race of aliens that also have the ability to cross different universes, this formed much of the plot for the last two seasons. What makes the show quite interesting is the story itself. Every episode feature an entirely new world, complete with different histories. And the show was able to present almost as many different, in some instances, quite bizarre, “universes” as the number of episodes in the series, which is almost a hundred. Thus, audiences anticipated every episode to see what new world the cast went into. Interestingly, some of the worlds visited had political undertones and feature a varying degree of “what-if” takes on historical events. Another interesting concept is that of the characters meeting a parallel world version of their own selves. The idea is a definitive marker for the series, as the doubles are as varied as the worlds that they are in. The actor's performance were also very good, which made the doubles more life like, which adds to the story's tension. The series also goes much further in some episodes and had several doubles of the characters at the same time in some episodes, which makes it even more interesting. One problem with the show is its tendency to reuse many plot devices (such as the hotel) too many times, thought this isn't enough to ruin the show's overall story. Complementing the show's story is its very good visual effects. As each world is sometimes quite different, the production created a wide array of different visual effects to present them. There is even an episode where there are loads of lifelike CG dinosaurs throughout the show. The wormhole that the cast uses to travel is also very distinct and is the most iconic aspect of the show itself. It was in fact quite popular that many other films and TV series have since adapted its visual design. These feature make the show a must watch for all sci-fi fans, while at the same time a good one for casual viewers. The series is also a good addition to every collectors list of best TV shows. |
