| Medications help us fight off disease and cure plenty of medical problems. Most of us take prescription medicines - drugs that, by law, must be prescribed by a general practitioner. If everything goes well, the medicine works for you as it is supposed to. But there is no "magic bullet", or medicine that works the same for everyone without any risks or side effects. A side effect is basically an unexpected occurrence that results from taking a drug. The commonest cause of side effects is the simple fact that prescription medicines are extremely concentrated and ordinarily not found in nature, so they adversely affect the liver. Once your liver is chronically stressed out by using a drug daily, any other stress you place on it, such as exposure to toxins, can compromise your well-being. As we become older, the liver works less efficient, so prescription medications badly affect aging. Side effects can be mild at first, and you might not attribute them to the drug you are using. Common examples include mild symptoms of tiredness, muscle weakness, forgetfulness, giddiness when you first stand up, trouble thinking clearly, untypical depression. Definitely, aging can cause all those effects, but prescription drugs can advance and hasten the process. Once you begin mixing medications the side effects enhance and magnify. When some medicines interact, they might become dangerous, ineffective or bring on potential health problems. At times, drug-to-drug interactions may bring on serious side effects, which may vary from mild to fatal. Prescription medications may interact with each other and with non-prescription drugs. Some types of food may also slow up drug absorption, increase or decrease its efficacy, or bring on unexpected side effects. Alcoholic beverages and caffeine may also impact on how medicines work. For example, mixing alcohol with beta blockers, a type of medicine taken to treat hypertension and heart problems, may reduce your blood pressure excessively. Alcohol may raise drowsiness and make it dangerous to drive or operate machinery if used with certain drugs. Combining big amounts of caffeine with bronchodilators โ prescribed to treat asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema โ may not be secure, because this type of medication and caffeine both stimulate the CNS. So, before you start taking a medicine, ask your medical practitioner about possible side effects and drug-to-drug interactions. If there is a natural remedy for the medical condition you are having, opt for the safest oral treatment. |
