| Symbols are pictures, objects, sounds, written words or something like that and stand for ideas, thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and feelings. A number of them are commonly used, such as white rectangle on the red background implying “stop”, others have special sense and stimulate deep feelings. For instance, such symbols are the crucifix in Christianity or the Star or David in Judaism. We're surrounded by symbols. Every day we face with something that has a symbolic significance. You can find symbols on money, in commercials, music compositions, books, politics and so on and so forth. To understand the significance of a symbol a viewer should know what this symbol refers to. For instance, the Chinese symbol of yin and yang seems a funny image with white and black colors for people that do not know the secret meaning of the sign. They may enjoy its aesthetic side and design, but they don't see more than that. Quite the contrary, in case a person knows the origin of the symbol he or she sees not only a picture, but an idea of deep intercommunication of things in our living. During the history of mankind symbols were widely applied in art. From time to time we need to read critics on a definite work of art to get the idea of the author. This is because the symbols language isn't so simple. So what are the most popular symbols in art and what do they refer to? Amidst the most common symbols used in works of art are books, a candle, clocks and mirrors. A book generally stands for transmitting of knowledge and learning. In case you see a burning candle on a painting it is for the most part a symbol of time passing or faith in God. From the other side, an extinguished candle stands for mourning and death. A clock stands for the time passing. In this respect the famous painting of Salvador Dali known as “Melting clocks” refers to an idea that nothing in our living is in line with some rules. And eventually, a mirror implies efforts to find the truth, but in some situations it just implies the vanity. Thus, symbols are everywhere around us. We just need to pay a little more attention to details to see them. |
