Corpulence is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Many people are unhappy with their present weight, but most are not certain how to change it.

Weight control is about long-term success. People who lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measures ordinarily put on back all (and often more) of the pounds they lost, because they have not permanently altered their habits. The body likes slack alterations in terms of diet and physical exercise.

For instance, someone who has not taken exercise for ages should not rush into running miles a day or pounding the treadmill. The intention to do so will leave you feeling disappointed and demotivated, and you are also much likely to cause damage to yourself and set your fitness levels back further.

The same occurs to corpulent people who suddenly start starving themselves. Diets that severely restrict calories or the types of food 'allowed' can bring on shortage of nutrients and vitamins that your body needs.

The body converts food into energy. Any excess energy is stored as fat. This means if you consume more food than your body needs to function properly, you will put on extra pounds. To lose weight, you need to make your body use up these stores of fat. The most efficacious way to do this is to reduce the amount of calories you consume and take more exercise.

Consume water instead of fizzy drinks and fruit cordials, swap whole milk for semi-skimmed, eat less lunch than usual, stop taking sugar in tea and coffee, order smaller servings of the food you prefer, avoid having a second portion at dinner, exclude unhealthy treats - such as chocolates, sugary cookies and crisps - between meals, reduce alcohol intake. Weight loss requires permanent alterations of eating habits. While weight-loss goals are normally set in term of weeks, the key objective is to maintain these changes over months and years.

Someone who begins to do exercise more, but sustains the same diet and calorie consumption, will almost surely lose weight. No matter if you hate gyms, even light exercise, such as a 20-minute walk, will be beneficial if done on a regular basis. Each time you get exercise more than usual, you burn calories. There are a great many means to increase the amount of activity you do. Racket sports, aerobics classes, running, walking and swimming will all make you fitter and healthier.

All these things will impact on your well-being positively and bring the intended results.
