Copper Mining And Treating



Copper, with chemical symbol Cu and atomic number 29, is a widely used metal that is highly conductive and slightly malleable when in its base form. The soft metal is considered especially unusual as a metal because of its pink color; most metals aside from gold are silver or white in color. However despite its unique appearance copper is most commonly used as an electrical or thermal conductor with uses in building materials, as the base for copper alloys, and in the production of copper products.





Copper Ore



Copper ore is removed from the earth in a variety of mines and once removed, it undergoes a process of concentration, roasting, smelting, and refining. Although copper is found in a variety of different ores the most common today is chalcopyrite. Copper only appears in very small levels of concentration within the ore, typically less than 0.6%.





Comminution And Extraction



This low concentration of copper means that that first stage in copper manufacturing is the comminution stage. Essentially this entails reducing the size of the rock particles so that ore can be removed from its constituent rock more easily. Following this, the ore needs to be fully removed from the rock gangue. Hydrometallurgical extraction or froth floating are the most common methods of liberating the ore from the gangue depending on whether the ore is oxide or sulfide.





Roasting



Roasting is an oxidization process that sees the ore partially oxidized. While this proved popular until just recently, since 2005 it has become common to use more advanced smelting processes that negate the need for the roasting step.





Creating Blister



Once mixed with a combination of silica and limestone, the ore is smelted at massively high temperatures (1200C). A liquid called copper matte is produced containing around 70% copper concentration. Air is blown through the matte to remove the sulfide leaving a 98% purity. This material is called blister because of the blistered appearance of its surface.





Electrolysis



Oxygen is removed from the blister by blowing natural gas through molten blister. Once this has been done, the copper has about 99% purity. Copper sulfate and sulfuric acid are added to the processed blister copper and electrolysis is used to remove further impurities. This is the stage where desirable by-products including gold may be found and removed.
