| A checking account is a bank account which enables individuals and businesses to make a deposit and withdraw funds from an account at any time. Different financial institutions apply different definitions for a checking account, but in general checking account holders can pay off debts using personal checks instead of cash. ATM cards and electronic debit cards can also be used to access individual accounts or make cash withdrawals. Virtually every bank renders some type of checking account service for their customers. Some may require an initial deposit before establishing a new account, along with proof of identification and contact information. A student or other low-income applicant may opt for a no-frills checking account which provides free use of personal checks and other services. Others may gain benefit from interest rate payments, provided that they maintain a high minimal balance each month. A typical checking account is handled through careful posting of deposits and withdrawals. The checking account holder has got a supply of official checks which contain all of the essential routing and posting information. When a check is filled in properly, the recipient can put it into his or her own bank account. A bank employee then files the check electronically and the check writer's bank receives the cancelled check and amount to be debited from the check writer's account. Owners of a checking account should keep track of their available funds, although the bank will routinely issue its own accounting statements. Checks must reflect an actual amount of money contained in the checking account itself. If a check is written for a sum higher than the available funds, the check writer faces countless fees and possible legal action. The recipient of the bad check can demand immediate cash payment for the original debt and a substantial fee for the returned check. Some financial institutions will shield checking account holders by making the appropriate payments and informing the check writer about the overdraft. Frequently the financial institution will recover their losses by charging for services provided, so it is better not to write checks when the balance is unknown.
