| Tired of all those nonsensical and violent cartoons that your kids watch on the boob tube? Now here's a TV show where they will surely enjoy all the action they want, while still being educational. Captain Planet is also a good way for them to learn a thing or two about environment conservation and racial equality. Captain Planet, or known in its full title as Captain Planet and the Planeteers, follows the adventures of five young people as they take on a crusade to protect the environment and fight those who pollute it. They come from different countries and each have a special ring that gives them the power to control a certain element: Kwame having earth, Wheeler wielding fire, Linka controlling wind, Gi with water, and Ma-Ti the heart. Note that the heart ring is not an element at all, but rather is representative of a virtue. When they face a much stronger enemy, they combine their powers to summon the eponymous Captain Planet. Each episode has the planeteers deal with environmental issues and concern. While they occasionally encounter one time villains, they also fight with recurring ones who are direct opposites of the causes that they are fighting for. There was also a villain that was the direct opposite of Captain Planet, aptly name Captain Pollution, who have the exact opposite of his powers. Arguably what Captain Planet is most famous for is its thrust about environmental issues. The topics it tackled were those relevant and of great concern during the time it was aired, and which are also relevant today. The most common topics that it touched include pollution, environmental destruction and overhunting. What makes the show even more interesting and educational, not only for kids, but also for adults as well, it that it also looks at moral issues. The most common things that where often discussed is greediness and hatred. Perhaps the most striking episode is “A Formula for Hate”, which tackles AIDS. The episode attacked the prejudice that many AIDS victims were experiencing and other people are throwing at them, which was very prevalent during the year when it was aired. The show was considered to be one of the very few children's shows that were bold enough to talk about AIDS. The show is also a good way for children to learn acceptance and cooperation with other people that are different. The planeteers themselves highlight this, for example the characters Wheeler, an American, and Linka, a Soviet, help each other, in a time when both countries are still antagonistic of each other. The Captain Planet DVD is definitely one of the shows that both you and your kids will definitely enjoy. You too will definitely learn a thing from it. |
