| The Star Trek series is definitely one of the most popular sci-fi TV series of all time. It is so popular that it has spawned the Trekkie phenomenon, its own brand of cult following. And with such a hit, it was bound to be followed by a sequel series. And Star Trek: The Next Generation proved to be a very good successor to the franchise. The series was able to mix in a good amount of the elements of the first series with new ones for the series. This made the show totally unique while at the same time still having the feel of the original Star Trek Star Trek: The Next Generation follows the crew of a new spaceship, the Enterprise (the same name as the original but an entirely different one), as they explore new worlds across space. Each episode of the series has the ships crew encountering many different alien races and helping them solve problems. The series is set seventy years after the original one and the movie. Since this is a sequel many characters from the original one reappears in either cameos or regular guestings. What makes the series very popular is basically the same thing that made the first Star Trek such a hit. The characters are definitely some of the most detailed in sci-fi history. The actors' portrayals of the characters were specially remarked both by critics and fans alike. Patrick Stewart's performance of the iconic Capt. Jean Luc Picard is highly praised, as does Michael Dom's work on the alien Worf. Furthermore, much like the original, instead of going with the usual good versus evil them, the series went a little deeper with its story. Thus the episodes feature a rather dark take on real life issues, such as slavery, war and racism. The show's characters is also very varied and are not stereotypes than many find very common in science fiction stories. For the science fiction fans out there, the show still has pretty much all of the immersive tech stuff that the first series had and they were made even cooler for this one. Another thing that both the Trekkies and non fans find interesting is the presentation of the Klingons (the alien regulars of the series) is rather in depth, with Worf being a major character. The Klingons' fictional culture are very detailed, in fact the show created a fictional writing system just for them. This one is definitely one of the highlights of the show. So if you are into spaceships and aliens, the Star Trek: The Next Generation DVD is definitely a must have. This one will surely appeal to both fans and non-fans alike. |
