About 5,000 years ago, the Chinese found a medicinal plant called ephedra sinica, that they used to deal with respiratory disorders. The plant, explains the "Harvard Medical School Family Health Guide," contains ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which are stimulants that constrict blood vessels.
